Chapter 19

Amelia

I wake up earlier than necessary, sleep evading me.

James was right. Of course he was.

I couldn’t stop thinking about him and what happened in his office, and I tried to get the feeling back, but it didn’t work. I told him it couldn’t happen again, but I want it to happen again. And again. And again.

He texted me last night telling me to meet him at seven in the lobby, and when I’m dressed and finish packing my last-minute items, I leave my suitcase by the door and sit on the couch with my second coffee of the morning.

I’m wearing my new pink pants and white satin blouse, and since I couldn’t sleep, I had time to curl my hair and do my makeup a little extra than I normally would. I certainly didn’t do it because I need the extra confidence it gives me to face James. No, definitely not.

My leg is bouncing from the caffeine and lack of sleep, and I stare at the clock until it’s finally 6:45 so it’s close enough to seven to go downstairs without looking like I’m eager to see him.

But when I get down there and see he’s already waiting for me, my heart lurches. I can only hope that he was eager to see me.

“Good morning.”

James’s head pops up from his phone and his eyes flare, raking down my body. He rubs his chin and stands. “Morning,” he grunts out, his voice rough, causing my legs to weaken as I walk. Is that what he’d sound like when he wakes up in the morning and he’s kissing his way down my body for another round?

“Let me,” he says, taking the suitcase from my hand. He hands it off to John outside and then opens the back door for me.

He stays glued to his phone the entire ride to the airport and I take to twisting my ring around my finger and looking out the window. I want to ask him where we’re going since we’re leaving the city rather than going to JFK or LaGuardia, but I hold it in.

We arrive at Teterboro Airport in Jersey and John drives us right around to the runways and parks near a white jet with ‘Lancaster Industries’ written on the side in black.

I’ve never even been on a plane, and my first time will be on a private jet.

A crew member from the airport takes our bags from the trunk and loads them onto the plane. When he comes off, John opens my door for me and James holds his hand out silently, indicating I should go first. I feel a little like a celebrity right now, and the first thing I notice when I reach the top of the stairs to the plane is a gold cursive L embroidered on the black carpet.

I step inside the plane and I’m in awe. It’s pure luxury. The right side is five rows of two cream leather bucket captain’s chairs each with some turned towards each other, which makes me think they’re all moveable to accommodate any situation.
